Ribbon Weaving

Hi Folks, I'm here today sharing a Crafty Ribbons DT ribbon weave clipboard with you...

I've used some pastel shades of plain satin 9mm.  You can find this here on the Crafty Ribbons website.  The clipboard is clear perspex and I picked it up from Paperchase a few years ago.

I'm no weaving expert - I think this is called Mad Weave.  This, presumably, is because it drives you mad trying to figure out how to do it!!  If you fancy a try you'll need lots of pins and a cork board bigger than the finished size of your weaving project.

First of all, you'll need to set up your vertical ribbons.  I went in a random order just to give me lots of colour but lining your ribbons up in a certain order will give you different finished patterns.  Pin to your cork board enough ribbons to cover the width of your clipboard (or other surface - you can add weaving to pretty much anything!)  They should be as close together as possible and exactly vertical for a nice tight weave - no wonky angles!

The second step is to weave ribbons in at a 30 degree angle.  I found it helpful to mark my corkboard and use a quilters ruler to get my angles exact.  The pattern to weave is over one, under two, over one, under two etc. of the vertical ribbons.  Your second ribbon should go over the next ribbon along to the one the first ribbon went over.  (It is easier to do than to explain!)  Again pin these ribbons in place so they don't move.

The third step is to weave a second set of ribbons in at a 30 degree angle, this time from the other side.  This time go over two, under one, over two, under one etc. of the vertical ribbons.  This time you need to navigate the second step ribbons too, making sure you are creating the little diamond shapes.

I realise I haven't put this into words very well so I'll point you to a video I have just found - video - I could have done with watching this before I got started!!

Once that was done I placed my clipboard on top.  I used super strong red backed double sided tape around the edge of the clipboard and one by one, unpinned each ribbon, folded it around the edge of the clipboard and stuck it down.  I trimmed the ends down and added another layer of tape and finished off with a length of ribbon to hide the unsightly ends.

The beauty of the perspex is you can see the weaving from both sides.  Because I wrapped it over the back and adhere only a small border on the front you still have a nice solid surface to write on too.

Tag us on Instagram (@craftyribbons or Facebook if you share a weaving project - we'd love to see!

never lose your SPARKLE

I've had so much fun playing with this frame...

I covered the wood with a coat of gesso and then played with all my blue, silver and purple Shimmerz products.  You can find a selection here.  It was done in many layers allowing each one to dry fully before adding more.

I treated the alphas with the same mists and stuck them to a piece of tinsel infused paper.  I then added as many sequins as I could!!  I used Sparkle Power, Wild and Free, Sweet Pea, Moonshine Delight and Silver Stardust.
I'm not ashamed to admit that this sits above my desk and when I run out of ideas or I'm waiting for something to dry I pick it up and give it a little shake!!  It makes a good anti-stress toy!

Bobby's Frame

I have another box frame to share...

This one is 90% Cocoa Vanilla supplies...

The wood star confetti and tiny star stickers are not CVS.

I'm not the biggest fan of wood veneer shapes but the CVS collections always catch my eye... this hello banner is gorgeous!

And I was pleased to use the vellum and acetate stars from the Totally Rad and Made of Awesome collections as a feature.

No sequins in this one - he's not a fan - so I restrained myself.  I think I'd like it better with a few sequins in!! ;)

Thanks for looking!

welly boots

I have a LOT of stencils.  My friend has just opened a new website selling stencils.  I don't use a lot of stencils.  I want a lot of the stencils on my friend's new website.  These four things don't sit all that well together...

I need to have a sort through my stencils.  I have a theory that I buy what I like the look of without thinking about how I will use it.  I did this with paper at the beginning of my crafting adventure too, and it led to a huge cull!  Any way, this layout uses one of my stencils...

along with a whole bunch of blue goodies dug out from my stash.  I love these kinds of layouts - they are not made with a collection or big brand supplies.  Rather they are a collection of tags from clothes I've bought, packaging, off cuts and snippets, doilies and labels with a few ribbons thrown in for good measure.

Thank You Card

I'm filling in for a team mate over on the Stick It Down card team this month.

As the sketch artist I usually mentally make a card whilst doing the sketch, so I challenged myself not to make the exact same card as my original idea.  (Although, I may have a go at making that too, it was a watercolour rainbow with vellum clouds...)

Of course, I stuck with the rainbow theme because 'rainbow is the best colour!'

Supplies:  White card blank, alpha stickers from Basic Grey, OHTO Graphic Liner pen, Swiss Dot Ribbon from Crafty Ribbons, red backed tape.

I hope you can squeeze in time to take on this sketch and join us at Stick It Down!

let's be friends

This little cutie and his teddy bear reminded me I had the perfect flair stashed away...

It is from Feed Your Craft and says let's be friends.  A perfect match for the photo, I think you'll agree.

I kept it simple, black and white paper from Cocoa Vanilla and a handful of small embellishments, with blue thread and ink splats for a splash of colour.

I think I'd feel a little guilty if I made all of my layouts this bare but I do love the white space!

Scraplifting Kaez Mum...

The SpeigelMom Scraps guest designer this month is Jen Gagne aka Kaez Mum.  Here is one of her layouts that I found particularly inspiring...

My take is just as colourful...

I used a tonne of Shimmerz products to colour my background and some cardstock which I ran through my cameo.  With my twelve flowers and colourful splodges in place I added a few sequins in matching colours and made of frame of journalling around the edge.

You can watch the process here...

Gingerbread Hugs

Crafty Ribbons have just released a new ribbon range - Gingerbread men for Christmas.  They are adorable!

Here is my first project with them.  They match the photo perfectly and I had so much fun with this one.  I drew up a cut file to match too.  You can grab that here.

I've added some lace and bias binding to the gingerbread ribbon and a tiny heart loop from the sentiment ribbon too.

Keeping Cool

My cheeky little Herb may be gone but he's certainly not forgotten.  This layout is of him 'sharing' an ice lolly in the summer heat last year.

I was in the mood for lots of layers when making this one!  I've gone with a hot colour palette which also matches the lolly 'we' were eating.

And I've become a big fan of a tulle layer on my layouts.  It adds great texture but is very subtle - both things I love.

Stick It Down

New sketches are up over at Stick It Down...

Here is my take on Lorraine's sketch:

Maybe I went a little off road but somethig was screaming make a rainbow at me!!

I've used 12x16 watercolour paper cut down to 12x12.  I used my Daniel Smith watercolour paints spashing around paint and water to encourage blooms and organic mixing.

I added a few puffy stickers and mounted my photo on some paper from an old Felicity Jane kit that Suse Fish designed.

Finally I added some colourful mini star stickers and some irridescant star sequins.

Don't forget to pop over to Stick It Down and join in with the sketch challenge!

Next up in my run of scraplifts is this one based on a Kerri Thomas original.

It is very simple but it packs a lot of sparkle!  The sequins are Lisa's Starry Night from the latest SpiegelMom Scraps release - and they are gorgeous!

The only other thing I did was tuck some black ric rac under the photo.  Perfect.

daily routine

Since this layout I have had half a stamped and painted image sat on my desk.  As you know, I don't like to throw anything away, so I designed this layout around it!

My only other criteria was 'use lots of ribbon!' and I managed to sneak some lace and sequins in too - life is hard!!

You an get your hands on the ribbons here: hearts and dots and you can find the teal ribbon and lilac lace on the Crafty Ribbons show stand - yes it is nearly show time again.

That Face

Another scraplift from the Mind The Scrap community... this one is based on Lisa's original.

These supplies are mainly Hello Heather by Pretty Little Studio.  I love the vibrant colour palette teamed up with bold black foam letters and, of course, my crisp white background!

You see the S's in Jesse?  They used to be ampersands!  A few snips and a little shaping and they turned out OK.  Another alpha hack to tuck up my sleeve!

You can see in an extreme close up that they have been doctored.  I think it would be easier to hide if they were not dimensional and I'm keen to try this again on cardtock alphas.

I also think I need to work on my doodling!!  Haha!

Shimmerz Paste-Eeze in Puttin On The Glitz, Yell-O It's Me
